Harvest Moon Festival

This week marks one year since we opened Swag The Dog and we can’t believe how fast the time has gone! We would like to thank everyone who helped make our fist year so great. From all of our “people partners” to our wonderful customers. We have spent the last year figuring out how to be more efficient and how to bring our customers the best products we can find! We are continuing to add great new products from new vendors and we are working on trying to make a big impact locally this summer.

We have joined the new Ogden chapter of Buy Local First and are planning on doing a couple of Ogden farmers markets this summer for the two dog events. We have teamed up with one of our favorite companies PetZen who also is an Ogden company! Make sure to check out all of the PetZen products on our website. Many adventurous dog products and eco friendly ones too.

Today I just met Debbie and JJ from newly opened The Animal Park on 24th street and not only are they great people, but have a wonderful facility that anyone would be so comfortable taking their pet. They are the coolest dog/cat hotel where your pet in not stuck all day in a kennel. I am impressed. Swag will be working with them to bring some of our products at their facility and Debbie has a great idea of having a photographer come in on holidays so that you can have their picture taken in Halloween costumes or Christmas Swag. We have some great costumes that we will be putting up on the website at the end of the summer.

A very special thanks to Adventurous Cakes, Coffee and Deli for their huge support and for baking ALL of those dog cookies all year for our local events! Bobbye is the best baker around and they make great people food too! We have put together gift baskets made from PetZen travel bowls and Adventurous Dog Cookies.

We are very excited about new partnerships and can’t wait to see what the next year will bring.

Extreme Barking, Nervousness & Anxiety - A Natural Solution??

Recently I talked to someone who has a nervous dog (noise,people, travel etc) and she told me about a product that has absolutely workedfor her dog. It is called athundershirt, which is basically a pressure wrap for your dog. You may think you’re doing your dog a favor when you apply products marketed to fight fleas and ticks, but thousands of animals are unintentionally poisoned by these products every year. Problems can occur if dogs accidentally ingest these products or if small dogs receive excessive amounts.

Your canine companion may look so cute as he sits there begging for a bite of your chocolate cake or a chip covered in guacamole, but not giving him what he wants could save his life. Dog poison No. 7: Chemical hazards. Not surprisingly, chemicals contained in antifreeze, paint thinner, and chemicals for pools can act as dog poison. The pet poisoning symptoms they may produce include stomach upset, depression, and chemical burns.

Dog poison No. 8: Household cleaners. Just as cleaners like bleach can poison people, they are also a leading cause of pet poisoning, resulting in stomach and respiratory tract problems.

Dog poison No. 9: Heavy metals. Lead, which may be in paint, linoleum, and batteries, can be poisonous if eaten by your dog, causing gastrointestinal and neurological problems. Zinc poisoning may occur in dogs that swallow pennies, producing symptoms of weakness from severe anemia.

Dog poison No. 10: Fertilizer. Products for your lawn and garden may be poisonous to pets that ingest them.

Breast Cancer Month is in October, but in honor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure next month in Salt Lake (and every day should be raising awareness) we are adding some extra "PINK" to Swag The Dogs website to do our part to raise awareness and increase support for breast cancer research. This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart having beat breast cancer myself (next month will be 4 years). Pink products to raise awareness and, all of the product featured will have portions of sales donated to various breast cancer organizations.

A fun tank sports the breast cancer ribbon logo and says "Bark for the Cure: Tank or a 12" Loofa pink squeaky toy with the breast cancer logo and we are also featuring Red Dingo's pink collar, harness and leashes that can be worn everyday and will remind people to "Think Pink" Sometimes it's the little things that make the greatest difference. New dog park is welcomed addition to Ogden

OGDEN -- It's just another pearl on the necklace.
That's how Jay Lowder, Ogden City Public Services director, described a new dog park that will be built at Miles Goodyear Park adjacent to the River Parkways and a developing kayak park.

"Location was key so that it was easy access from any direction," he said. "We put it by the parkway trail. We hope to get people using that section of the trail."

A 2.5-acre section on the north side of the park at 2542 A Ave. eventually will feature watering stations, pavilions, an agility course, and an area designated for small dogs only. The project will be completed in phases because of funding issues, said Bob Geier, director for Ogden City Animal Services. Geier said they asked for $124,000 in funding from Weber County's RAMP program, but were awarded only $62,000.

"It's not fully funded," Geier said. "We're still working with people to get as much done as we possibly can. Some of the gazebos and stuff probably won't be done, because they are high-dollar items."

Geier said Ogden Animal Services is asking for donations from the public to help close the gap to make the dog park a reality sooner. He is hopeful the first phase, which will include cultivating the grassy areas, adding the agility course and fencing in the park, will be completed by midsummer. The rest of the project will rely solely on if and when they get enough donations to make it a reality.

"It's what's been needed for a long time," Geier said. "It's an amenity that all civilized towns and cities should have. It gives the people a place to allow their animals to play together and let them have an off-leash experience."

Lowder said many people have expressed an interest in a dog park over the years.

"There's been a desire expressed to the city from the community for many years now," he said. "You'd be amazed at how many people appreciate something like this."

South Ogden has had an official dog park for almost two years on Palmer Drive, and it has been well-received by residents, according to Public Works Director John Anderson.

"The park is used very regularly," Anderson said. "For the most part, people using the park have been very good about cleaning up after their pets."

Geier said the location of the Ogden dog park will be secluded enough so it will have a minimal impact on the surrounding neighborhoods.

"It's not isolated, but we don't think there'll be any real issues with dogs barking," he said.

Missing dog found 600 miles from home
DELAND, FL (WKOW) -- A Virginia couple is reunited with their missing German shepherd, which somehow made his way to Florida.

About two weeks before Christmas, Deacon, an 85-pound German shepherd, went missing from his family home in rural Stuart, Va.Pamela Holt thought her 18-month-old German shepherd “Deacon” was gone for good. That’s why she was so surprised when she got a call from someone claiming that Deacon had been found.

Holt, of Stuart, Va., said she thought DeLand Animal Control Officer Gary Thomas was playing a “mean trick” when he called to say he found her dog. The dog had been missing since December. The Holts thought Deacon had died."I said 'What a mean trick,' " Holt told the Daytona Beach News Journal. "My husband and I had grieved and had moved on. We had decided we were not going to get any more dogs."
According to police reports, a convenience store clerk saw Deacon and another dog running in traffic on Feb. 18 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The clerk called authorities and the dogs were taken to a kennel.
Deacon had a microchip implanted, which helped Thomas track down the Holts. The couple drove 10 hours from Virginia to Florida to pick Deacon up and bring him home.
It's still a mystery how Deacon got to Florida. It seems the Holts may never know.

Yesterday, a friend of mine talked with OC Council member Jesse Garcia about a legal DOG Park in Ogden on Ogden-owned land. Jesse agreed with my friend that NOW was the time for every dog-owning Ogden resident to contact their Council Member for their district and ask them to be sure that the OGDEN CITY MASTER PLAN for OPEN SPACE included as least ONE 2.5 acre plus...........fenced, legally designated DOG PARK. Or the land for it.My friend asked Jesse to talk with other Ogden City Council members about the need to set aside NOW in the Open Space Plan that is being discussed......... land for a DOG PARK. Because the land along the Weber River, south of the 24th ST Kayak Park was deemed too dangerous to house a public DOG PARK in 2007, a different location should be considered.Jess pointed out that although the Ogden City Council could, generally speaking, agree to put aside land/ Ogden owned open space........ for a DOG PARK, Jesse said it would take a group of OGDEN CITIZENS to write up a proposal and present it to the Ogden City Council, in order to go forward. My friend asked Jesse to get the other Ogden City Council members ON BOARD for such a proposal, since an Ogden City Dog Park is LONG OVERDUE. Jesse said he understood that. He agreed that the proposal had to come from a group of interested Ogden residents. And that he would get Ogden City Council members to take such a proposal seriously.

When you consider the size of grant applications that are presented to the RAMP FUND committees by end of January, every year, an Ogden City Council Sponsored RAMP FUND application for $15,000.00 for a DOG PARK.........would be small indeed.

Contact your DOG LOVING friends who live in Ogden. Get a group together. Write a proposal and present it to the Ogden City Council in early Jan 2010. Smaller funding for DOG PARK items like park benches, MuttMitt dispensers, Park Rules signs..........can be raised from local VETs and local big box retail stores like Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco.

A community-supported, city-owned DOG PARK in Ogden is a great way to go. The Ogden City Council is listening. If this proposal does not interest you, send a hot link of this article onto a dog-owning friend in OGDEN who could help. Use the public forum that the Standard Examiner has provided to vet the concerns of such a dog park. As well, start suggesting parks in the Ogden Parks system or parts of existing parks that could be fenced off for a DOG PARK.

As most people here know, there is NO Ogden City Dog Park.........YET. However last FRI FEB 12,2010.......I talked with DEBORAH BARNES, VP, OGDEN-WEBER HUMANE SOCIETY, and she told me that her group is working on making an official, off leash, totally fenced DOG PARK happen in BIG DEE PARK, next to El Monte Golf Course, and just down Park St from Rainbow Gardens, the Dinosaur Museum and the current Ogden Animal Shelter building.

Info on this DOG PARK-in progress will be posted on FRIENDS OF OGDEN CITY DOG PARK. Many of the people who worked on making SODP (South Ogden Dog Park) happen, from 6.1.2007-6.9.2008 when it opened........are joining the FB group and posting their ideas on that FB group site. So come on over an join us....

A good friend of ours recently let me know about a great cause she's involved with. It's a local Rescue group that focuses on finding homes for black dogs. Here is an excerpt from their website http://www.blackdogrescueproject.com/.

"Why Black Dogs? For those involved with dog rescue organizations and shelters, Black Dog Syndrome is a very real phenomenon. Rescues and shelters around the country know that black dogs are the last to be adopted and among the first to be euthanized. According to the National Council on Pet Population, approximately 3-4 million dogs are euthanized each year. Dog rescue statistics provide hard data for a problem that rescue volunteers already understand. Any dog that enters a shelter is faced with an uphill battle and more often than not, a grim future. 15% of dogs are fortunate to be reunited with their owners. Nearly 60% of dogs that enter shelters are euthanized. Only 25% of dogs entering a shelter are lucky enough to be adopted. There are no statistics available on how many black dogs are euthanized, but we know that more black dogs are euthanized than dogs with other coat colors. The black dog is the underdog of all rescue dogs. Maybe they don't photograph as well as lighter colored dogs. Maybe it is because Hollywood teaches us that black always represents the bad guy. Maybe it is because many of the larger breeds that tend to end up in shelters and rescues are predominately black.

Whatever the reason, placing a black dog in a local shelter is usually a death sentence." I urge all of our readers to check this out and support them in their quest. We are getting close to opening our site in June and working madly to build the site, order our goods, and plan our events.

We are excited to be working with a local baker to create gourmet doggie treats. Look for us at the Farmer's market and other local Ogden events this summer.

One of those events will be at Weber State on May 6^th. This event is called "Cooking Up Summer." We will be selling a little preview of our Swag The Dog goods as well as the gourmet dog treats. We will also have our raffle postcards available to fill out at our booth. Come by and say hi.

What's in a name???

we've had many people ask how we came up with our name, and more importantly what does our name mean, so i thought i'd do a little explaining.

we came out with a bang when it came to possible names....after many brainstorming sessions while sipping chai tea, many great suggestions, and much needed feedback from friends and family we were able to make a MAJOR pro and con list (Paula and I are both Tauruses to a "T"). finally we combined two of our fav's to form the catchy moniker "Swag the Dog". ok, to be honest i couldn't do another sushi dinner with my boyfriend where the only conversation was "how 'bout _" or "what about_"..... many of which were inappropriate. love ya babe ;-)

anyway, we thought it was clever and something people could easily remember. now for those of you who aren't familiar with the term "Swag", you obviously don't watch The Office (check out the third season, episode 2 "The Convention"). below is the textbook definition for swag:

Swag (swag)
loot, merchandise, goods -- appearance, style, or the way one carries their self. -- to sway. Stuff We All Get.

and if you need it used in a sentence:

"I basically decorated my condo for free with all of my swag.".....Michael Scott.
